Studio praxis reflection 1

In this class we focused primarily on microphones and cardioid patterns of microphones, which was interesting to broaden my knowledge on them as well as invoking some ideas about the different uses for these different types, and for the possible practical applications of each kind of microphone, not just for accurate and conventionally effective recording techniques, but also for artistic and creative effect (especially with the hyper cardioid pattern which was super focused directionally, while still having some room sound. Also the idea Milo posed to us about how we could route the channels of a microphone like this (being that it records in stereo) by duplicating the sides channel and having one on each side, but bussed together on the mixer, with the front microphone being central and on a different channel, and being able to automate the control of these channels to bring focus to the central audio signal and then bring in the ambience and stereo sound. I feel like this could be very effective having full control over subtle aspects of space.

An analogy that stuck with me from this was comparing hearing through different microphones as seeing through different lenses, which is an accurate analogy when you think about either process being just the experience of recieving certain frequencies through a certain filter, and how certain lenses may have different focuses and frequency ranges that are allowed through.
