This is a project I recently started with a friend and musical collaborator of mine (who goes by the name ‘Noury Andre’). The first two tracks in the playlist are an ep, which we have yet to name. It was created by recording the room whilst we improvised for around half an hour switching between one of us playing keyboard with different chains of effects used and the other playing a classical guitar. Using this recording, I made 11 beats/ loops (some interludes), which Noury and a friend of mine who goes by ‘bac of i lids’ added some vocals to some of these beats. When I made the beats it was as I was going through the improvisation recording so naturally it ended up also in the same chronological order as the improvisation itself, and I liked this idea to keep the songs in that order because it flows very naturally from one idea to another, in the same flow as they were originally thought. As we conversed during the improvisation, naturally some parts of conversation ended up in the parts I sampled as I was making the beats, which I feel gives a very interesting sound and gives slight glimpses of where our minds were in those moments too. I also then ran all the individual tracks through the sp404 afterwards to further edit and add certain irregular changes and blends between tracks.
After making that EP, the three of us have decided to start a group, where our music follows this same idea of sampling our own live improvisations, which I feel is a good balance for the amount of sampling I do (of other peoples music) with the rest of my time as a beat maker. I feel this will give a very distinct sound to the group also that I have not heard too much but that I like. We were very inspired by the 2013 era Hype Williams/ bo khat eternal troof family band kind of stuff in terms of the free improvisation.
The following two recordings are two Ableton recordings from an improvisation session with me and Noury Andre, with the first track being me on keys which I was modulating live with Ableton, and Noury on the guitar which was also going into Ableton. The last track in the playlist is the other improvisation session in which we switched instruments. We might put out some of these improvisation sessions uncut and in full under this group idea also, to give the full journey/ conversation, and I think it would make an interesting two track to just have an hour of improvisation all in order of creation just two people conversing with two instruments.
