During last weeks sound for screen class, we went out in pairs to collect some field recordings, which was the first time I had done so with a set intention. The intention behind this, was to re score a clip from the movie ‘We need to talk about Kevin’.
Me and my partner Inyake spoke about how we might approach this task and came up with some ideas such as recording in the toilets to create liquid type sounds we could manipulate for certain textures. We recorded indoors and outdoors, attempting to find sounds that we could use for both diegetic and non diegetic sound for the clip. We found some high pitched breaking noises from cars that I thought would make a good intense/ uneasy feelings as a non diegetic sound, as well as crowd and wind noises which would create a good atmosphere for the opening crowd scene.
When we finished our recordings and got back to the class, there was no time to start putting them into protools, so I had these sounds on my usb, and decided to experiment with them at home since I had such a variety of textures and tones, I thought it would be interesting to try and make a piece using only these sounds to create some different loops and storyline/ melody. I created a 3 minute piece which takes the lister on the walk we made and the journey we took to find the sounds we found.
This week we came back to this idea and this time I used a shotgun microphone which had a much more focused response than the zoom I had used before, and was also in mono. It was good that we had some time to reflect on which sounds we hadn’t captured the first time that we might want to go out and get because its given us a wide pallet of sounds to use for our clip which we started layering today, which was good practice for our assignment to do the same to a movie clip of our choice.
