aural cultures research

My initial research for the aural cultures paper I am creating on the splayed movement, was going back to a video a friend of mine had made, of the first London ‘Splayworld’ show I had put on with my friend Tony Bontana, as well as the video for the second Splayworld show. During these videos there were also scenes of interviews outside the shows in which performers and guests were asked some questions on the night, the set, the movement and life, and I found these interviews the perfect material for both research and for sampling during the audio paper itself. There was also many clips which happened to include original productions by myself, which I chose to include to add to the background ambiance and feeling. Analysing these interviews I found lots of useful quotes from artists, and I’m very glad this was documented as it was an important point in the timeline and lineage of the movement. One of my favourite clips was of my friend Josh {aka Jkarri} saying ‘Freedom and liberation through sound’ which I feel explains and defines the motives and ideas behind the whole splayed movement.

Also the general sound of the crowd outside the venue and the words and energies present in the audio is very informative I feel in bringing the listener to the world of the splay {aka Splayworld}.
