aural cultures research 2

Another form of research for me was an interview from 2008 of producers/ DJ’s/ Innovators Ras G and DJ Sacred. This is an interview I have rewatched many times now, and that I learnt a lot from, as well as hearing a lot of views and points that resonated very heavily with my view on things, especially music. In this music, they mostly spoke on their relation to vinyls and hip hop, and their individual entry points to hip hop.

Ras G talking about entry point into hip hop and how he always had the ear for it, was also something that I related to as I have always had a very keen interest in how these songs were created and seeing the creators of these records as some sort of gods that had created these worlds that we all occasionally enter.

Dj Sacred’s way of talking about hip hop and sampling especially was something that stuck heavily with me. He spoke on the science of taking records that he knew and recreating collages and new art pieces with these records. This was especially significant in this time point, as sampling hadn’t become such a mainstream accepted and known about thing outside of Hip Hop yet.

I decided to use certain excerpts from this interview in my audio paper as they said some very important points which relate to the topic of the audio paper very closely, such as Sacred’s mention of records that aren’t on digital and this being like finding some ancient scrolls of information that could start societies and movements and inspire ideas that can make change.
