For my second portfolio piece of the two, I plan to explore the idea of sound for screen and scoring for short films with not much direct narrative or storyline.
The idea of the short film I want to create and score is based on subconscious expression. I believe the most natural and most subconscious form of public expression is facial expressions – as this is a form of expression every human uses at all points whether intentionally or not. I think therefor the same way we see emotions expressed in music and art, we should appreciate the emotions expressed through facial expressions. Walking down Walworth road, and looking directly at peoples faces is was appreciating the variety of facial expressions I was seeing, and was wishing there was a short film with zoomed in and slowed down clips of these facial expressions in their natural state exactly how I was seeing them there & then. I started thinking about how these faces would not be the same and not be natural if they were acting, as then it would be conscious imitation of expression rather than subconscious un-intentional expression.
I decided to make this short film by walking round with a camera hanging down pointed forward, recording, however purposely not looking at the camera screen, and looking directly at the faces of everyone who walked past, so that they didn’t think I was recording or act differently.
I realise that even this is still problematic and controversial as not everybody captured in the film may want to be on film, but I think for the sake of the art it is something I am willing to proceed with anyway. I looked into the legality and found it is completely legal, as with when news is filmed in public and peoples faces are in it, they will still have their faces on TV whether willing or not.
I think this will be an interesting project to score as normally the emotion charged in the music is directly related to the emotional expression of the scene on the screen, however this project will be scoring a variety of expressions on the faces of those who happened to walk past me, and I believe the emotion conveyed will be heavily influenced by the direction of the sounds I use to score the project.
