Slauson Malone (aka Jasper Marsalis)
Originally a left-field hip-hop producer but has slowly moved more into experimental “Genre-neglecting” music that is hard to fit into boxes as it is so individual and varied. He explores many different sonic areas and feelings and goes between harmony and dissonance and intense and peaceful moments seamlessly and beautifully.
Marsalis comes from a very notable jazz lineage with his father Wynton Marsalis being a very successful trumpet player who has one 9 grammy awards, and his great grandfather being Ellis Marsalis, a well known piano player (as well as saxophone & clarinet which he started on), who played with Ornette Coleman. So it makes sense that Jasper would be one of the greatest contemporary musicians (in my opinion)
One of my favourite things about Marsalis is his conceptual approach to his art in both his albums and his performances, and his raw expression of feeling.
