from my last meeting with my tutor Gareth I have realised the main areas I need to now focus on for my portfolio unit, which is talking/ writing about the 3 main parts of the piece: the improvisational aspect, the intentional lo-fidelity method of recording and the content of the recordings used.
I will write in further detail about my choices in these three aspects, as well as contextualising others that have made similar choices, and/ or inspired my choices in these areas.
some of the people who have inspired these choices are Daniel Johnston, who’s lo-fidelity cassette recordings have a significantly special charm about them, and feel very raw and honest. Also, the passion for improvisation shown by artists such as Milford Graves and Ornette Coleman deeply inspired my perspective on the practice of improvisation.
the choice of the contents of the recordings is influenced by a large amalgamation of my listening, and my affinity for relatively simple ideas that effectively convey raw emotion, such as recordings of piano and guitar improvisation.
