The combination of turntablism and sound arts is not something I had previously thought much about before watching this interesting talk by sound artist and dj ‘NikNak’. Her use of having field recordings and strange sounds on vinyl, which she scratched along with other instrumentalists who were improvising reminded me of the classic footage from when Madlib was in Brazil with a variety of other dj’s and instrumentalists, for the Brasilintime project. This is a very interesting idea to me, as a producer who is often manipulating sounds (both samples and my own recordings), it is a similar kind of concept, however having the time point of the sound directly in control under your fingers in real time. The idea of pushing genres further to create weirder sounds and further out ideas really appeals to me too, and her attitude that more people should be making ‘weird shit’ really resonated with me. Her idea of mixing different concepts and ideas between her own interests which have roots in a variety of musical areas, as well as sound art, was something that inspired me to think more about combining the different sound elements of my practice to create new sounds. I might follow this idea further in terms of combining my sample manipulation in a context of sound arts.
