I think I will use this scene from 2001, as there isn’t much dialogue and its a scene with a lot of mental process for the protagonist that I can draw out in the score.
I have decided to combine my two specialisation options of studio praxis and sound for screen. For this piece I will sample some of my works from studio praxis (such as the ‘aloistorm’ piece I made for the storm task, where we created a piece using synthesis, which was supposed to be based on the idea of a storm). I will also sample some moments from the binaural recording of the improvisations we did in studio praxis, as I feel this will give some interesting dimensions to the piece, and I think there is some sounds that can be manipulated in interesting ways. There was another piece that I created made purely from recordings made using the Zoom field recorder, which has some textures that I was quite fond of, which I will subtly use to a variety of effects.

The obscurity of the scene and the openness to interpretation is another aspect of this scene that drew me towards it, which will allow room for me to take it in some different directions.
Film synopsis: An imposing black structure provides a connection between the past and the future in this enigmatic adaptation of a short story by revered sci-fi author Arthur C. Clarke. When Dr. Dave Bowman (Keir Dullea) and other astronauts are sent on a mysterious mission, their ship’s computer system, HAL, begins to display increasingly strange behavior, leading up to a tense showdown between man and machine that results in a mind-bending trek through space and time.
The original approach to sound for this film was to commission composer Alex North to create the score for the film. However the director Stanley Kubrick decided to use his own choice of classical music pieces to accompany the film (that were originally only guide tracks) instead of the score that Alex North created for the film. His reasoning behind the decision was based on wanting to use the best possible music that existed throughout time that would fit.
