development of film clip rescore

This is where the clip rescore is at currently on the 2nd of November. I am currently at the stage of the process where I have started to put together the majority of the pieces of my own that I wanted to use for the score, however at the moment I feel there is too much going on, which will be good for certain points but, I plan to strip back elements to highlight other certain parts to the layers. Once I have stripped back to only the elements that I wish to keep, of the existing pieces, I plan to play another layer improvised while watching the clip, which will tie together the separate elements.

I plan not to use a lot of foley, but I will use some footsteps, that I will add some effects to (combined with the field recordings I’ve made) in order to create a strange sense of space, since he’s on an alien planet but in a strangely familiar yet distant surrounding. I will record these footsteps today (1:19 – 3:06 is footsteps, after that is a slight sound of the older version of him eating at around 3:10 and then hearing the sound of the younger him walking behind him and turns around at 3:35-3:54). For this part where the older him notices the sound of the younger him walking, I plan to especially cut out the music, to bring focus to the foley and atmospheres.

The original sound design for the film was a score of pre existing classical compositions that was chosen by Stanley Kubrick himself (originally only as a guide score but was chosen as the final score in the end). For the scene I chose however, the score was very minimal and textural, however I will introduce a bit more weight on the score by form of synthesis to create a larger range of dynamics and feelings by the score.

So far I’ve been recording a variety of different synth sounds and field recordings which I’ve been layering and arranging in my project, which have been working together very well, however I still plan to strip back certain layers and elements to construct, deconstruct and re construct.

I spent some time at the Stanley Kubrick archive going through the daily continuity reports and some books about the movie (2001: a space odyssey), which gave me good insight into the process creating and conceptualising the movie, both pre-productions, during- production and post- production. The main concepts I took note of and drew from in my piece were the conflict and dynamic between man and robot/ AI, as well as the conflict and dynamic between the shared reality within a society, and the limitless possibilities of reality that lie within the idea of space exploration, and the idea of the boundaries of this reality being unknown.
