in an exercise focused on listening to the sounds of claps in an open hall, with a big natural reverberation, and listening carefully to the length of the tail of the reverb’d sound and also afterwards paying careful attention to the place the clap sound came from (with our eyes closed). This close attention to these aspects of the sound made me really appreciate and notice the impact of these details in sound in order to feel place and location, as well as size of place. The more time we spent focusing on these aspects of the sounds, the more I noticed the effects and feeling the elements gave.
After thinking about this idea for a while I decided I needed to focus on these details more in my piece to be very intentional in the lengths of the reverbs I use in order to have the most control on perception of size distance and direction.
Another thing I noticed during the experience was the feeling when I heard a noise right behind me, and we were talking about the animalistic evolutionary causes for this feeling being whether something will make you its prey (when its behind you) or whether the sound in-front of you can be your prey.
I found this interesting how these reactions have remained in our minds through time, and thought that I should use this human reaction system to play with it, in the distances and positions of sounds in my piece, (as to whether I want them to appear close or far/ left or right)
