specialisation proposal – idea 1 {audio cctv}

idea: to have an audio cctv situation where the visiter creates half of the piece as the sound of their presence in the exhibition, in the same way cctv has no purpose without people in the image of the cctv. The microphones will pick up audio from the room and playback the audio with a big delay as if to leave a trace of the sounds that have been in the room.

I want to have a heavy compression on the sound so that the less sound is input into the microphone the more the compression brings up the other sounds in the room, so that the volume of sound output from the speakers stays relatively similar, so that it is noticeable when people enter the room from a sound space and so that the room reacts to the presence of their sound as they enter the room.

This compression with the delay from before should leave some traces of the sounds from before remaining so that the sounds build up over time as more sounds are fed into the microphones from the visitors.

in the analogy with cctv instead of having a screen showing the image picked up by the cameras, the sound picked up by the microphones will be showing through the speakers.

instead of having the sound coming from inside the room, it could be coming from other rooms.

Hardware needed – microphone, 4 speakers, Mac mini to run Ableton set up.
